The end of the school year is full of excitement for many. Summer is approaching, no homework, more time with friends, and staying up late. However, for many, this is also a very anxious time. Especially for those getting ready for high school. Here are a few tips coming from someone who went from a small charter middle school to a huge public high school in order to stay close to God and have a great four years.
- 1. Make your own decisions and your why.
- I cannot stress enough how important this one is. When you enter high school, you will face many temptations and “opportunities” to make poor choices. For many, I’m sure your parents have already told you all of the things: don’t drink, vape, do drugs, etc. Unfortunately, I have seen many times that this is not enough. Your parents cannot make that personal choice for you, and it is far too easy in this day and age to still fall into temptation if you have that desire yourself. Instead, know why YOU want to say no to these things. For me, I don’t drink, do drugs, vape, or date around because I have seen the effects they have on people and know that God has a far better plan for me than these things do. These things give you temporary satisfaction, but God gives you eternal life, love, and salvation. Here are some important verses to help:
- Proverbs 20:1, Proverbs 23:29-30, Romans 13:13, Ephesians 5:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8
- 2. Do not be ashamed of your faith
- I know that when starting a new school and trying to find new friends, it is so tempting to try and fit in: laughing at all of their jokes, participating in all of their activities, etc. However, these are not the plans God has for you. We are called to stand out in our faith: The Light of the World, The Salt of the Earth. I know this is so difficult, but you will reap what you sow. If you put your faith and trust into God, you will be rewarded, even if you don’t see the benefits right away. However, without God, it will be much more difficult. God is your best friend at all times. He is always there for you.
- Joshua 1:9, 1 Chronicles 28:20, Isaiah 41:10
- 3. Surround yourself with people who lift you up in the Spirit
- This may not always be at school. It is important to find a good Church or Youth Group that works for you that can help you during these important formative years.
- 4. Rember that everything is an opportunity to honor God
- Sometimes, the last thing you want to do after school is more homework. All you want to do is go on your phone, hang out with friends, anything but that. However, this is a great way to honor God. Rather than procrastinating, do it as soon as you can. Give it your best work, He will do the rest.
- Colossians 2:23, 1 Corinthians 15:58, 2 Timothy, 2:15
Last but not least, don’t worry. You’ve got this and God’s got you. I hope you have the best year ever!
